One in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. But we know every survivor is more than a statistic; they’re a dad, husband, brother and a friend.
So, we understand that the support a man receives to help improve their fitness and wellbeing after treatment needs to be just as individual as they are.
Prostate cancer mainly affects men over 50 and a natural part of aging is that the Sunday morning kick around in the park has been replaced with Match of the Day on the telly.
But staying active after treatment for prostate cancer is crucial to help lift mood and cope with the mental effects, as well as improve physical health and take back control.
With PALS, our teachers guide and support participants to make life-style changes which will help them to rebuild their fitness and their confidence levels.
We work in small groups of no more than eight, so we get to know every participant and work with them and their individual needs.
We believe that having a laugh and enjoying what you do is crucial to getting the best out of it, so each week we introduce new activities like walking football, Nordic walking and tai chi.
There’s no sweating it out at the gym or wearing Lycra, just fitness and perhaps even new friendship in a supportive setting.
As well as learning exercises that will help with continence control, every programme will cover bone health – which can be affected by treatment – and weight management.
And the best bit? It’s completely free, because we believe that every prostate cancer survivor should have access to support and rehabilitation, no matter what their financial circumstances.
