FAQs

Below you will find some frequently asked questions - and answers!

But don't worry if your question isn't here. Just get in touch - and we'll help!

  • I’m still working. Does my employer have to give me time off for In the Pink if it’s in working hours?

Sadly, no they don’t – although we’ve worked with supportive and forward-thinking employers who have done.

You could signpost them to this website or we have produced a letter for employers explaining how the programme will benefit you – and ultimately your workplace. If you would like a copy, please email admin@scte-activities.org.uk

We do run some programmes in the evening for those who have commitments during the day.

If you would like to find out more about cancer and your employment rights, Working with Cancer, has lots of great information.

  • I’m finding it hard to do everyday things wash my hair. Is that normal after breast cancer treatment?

Yes, it is – and it’s something that’s not talked about often enough and why we work to raise awareness and open conversations about the after-effects of treatment.

When a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, the focus is on surviving – not what may happen to her body afterwards.

Everyday issues like these are not discussed at hospital appointments, or by friends and family afterwards.

Often, women feel that they’re ‘the only ones’ that this has happened to, are embarrassed to talk about it, or think that it’s a ‘normal’ outcome of treatment.

It doesn’t have to be this way and that’s why we’ve developed In the Pink, because the right exercise really can help make a big different to physical recovery.

We’ve worked with lots of women who after completing the programme get much better levels of strength and suppleness – some even say it’s better than before!

If you would like to read or watch a video about the difference In the Pink has made to the lives of some of real women who have taken part, you can learn more here.

  • I’ve never done Pilates before. Can I still join In the Pink?

There is no experience necessary to join a programme. In fact, lots of people we have worked with have never done Pilates before. So, you won’t be alone!

  • My breast cancer treatment was 10 years ago. Am I still eligible for In the Pink?

Yes! It doesn’t matter how long ago your treatment was, if you would like to improve your physical fitness and overall wellbeing, we would love you to join us. Why not give us a call on 0300 365 9791 and we can talk through how we could help. Calls are charged at your usual network rate.

  • What do I wear? Do I need to bring anything?

Don’t worry, it’s nothing fancy – just loose, comfortable clothes, trainers, a water bottle and yourself.

When you join In the Pink, you will receive a welcome letter with a reminder of everything you’ll need to bring.

  • How much does it cost to join In the Pink?

In the Pink is free, because we believe that every woman should have access to physical rehabilitation following treatment for breast cancer, no matter what her financial circumstances.

But SCTE, the charity which runs it, depends on donations and events to raise funds. If you would like to find out more, find out more about fundraising for us.

  • Do I need my consultant or GPs permission to join In the Pink?

You can start In the Pink six weeks post-operative or when you have received your surgeon’s approval to begin therapeutic exercise.

You’re welcome to talk it through to your GP before you join us. In fact, we would love it you signposted them to our website, so that they can learn more about what we do too – which might be helpful for other survivors in the future.

Before you join In the Pink, you will be assessment by one of our teachers. Participant safety is a priority and if they have any concerns regarding your health, they may refer you back to your GP before accepting you on the programme.

  • How long should I wait after my treatment?

See above. In theory you could join In the Pink while undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Realistically, many women will find that’s too soon for them, and join us several months – or even years - down the line. After that, as long as there’s a programme running in your area, we’re here whenever you’re ready.

  • Is there an age limit?

Participants must be 18 or over. Our programmes welcome all age groups, so you don’t need to worry about being the oldest, youngest or anywhere in between. You’ll find a warm welcome, whatever your age.
